Seminar on ‘Drug Abuse’ organized at Baramulla
Baramulla : Continuing its efforts towards total eradication of drugs and to educate masses about its ill consequences, District administration Baramulla in collaboration with several other departments including Health, Education,Police, Municipal Council, Youth Services and Sports,Nehru Yuva kender,Social Welfare,Sports Council and some NGOs today organized a day long seminar on ‘Drug Abuse’ at Sheerwani Hall in connection with the Drug De-Addiction week which commences today.
The seminar marked the overwhelming participation of different stakeholders viz students, ASHA and Anganwardi workers, civil society members, representatives of various trade associations and other prominent sections of the society.
The special drug de-addiction week, starting from April 29 to May 05 is being celebrated by the administration across the district in the wake of growing menace of drug addiction among the youth. During the week, special activities viz seminars, awareness camps, symposiums, rallies and other related activities shall be organized as an effort to generate mass awareness among the people regarding its hazardous effects.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Dr G N Itoo complimented the participants for their active participation and highlighted the need to protect our young generation from the menace. He said that drug abuse poses a serious challenge to our society during which he underlined the need to disseminate awareness through different mediums. He urged upon different sections of the society to act vibrantly against it besides assuring every possible initiative from the district administration to nip this menace in the bud.
Highlighting the role of teachers, Dr Itoo said that a teacher has a major role to play in this regard as he acts as a friend, philosopher and guide for a student. Meanwhile, he stressed upon the parents to closely monitor their children whether they are indulged into fallacious activities inflicted upon them through different mediums including mobile phones, internet etc. He also urged upon them to let their wards to choose different career avenues as it helps them to channelize their potential in a positive way.
SSP Baramulla Abdul Quyoom, during his address signified the main aim of the seminar and said that lack of parental care and affection is the main cause that thrusts our youth towards drug addiction. He highlighted the role of parents and said that mother has a greater say in social development of a child as she acts as the first teacher and guide. He also reiterated the role of police department and said that stringent actions shall be taken against drug peddlers.
Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Chief executive Officer MC Bramulla, Coordinator NYK,Medical Superintendent DH, President MC Baramulla and various other concerned officers were present on the occasion.
Earlier, the DC flags off anti drug rally to formally inaugurate the week. The rally comprising of students, ASHA and Anganwardi workers and other sections of the society, started from the DC office and went through different markets wherein the participants were holding banners and play cards displaying various messages and appeals against drug addiction.
