Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Bunpora Mohalla of Dangerpora sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday.

The gunfight started after security forces received an input about the presence of militants following which a joint party of the police, army’s 22RR and CRPF launched a search operation in Dangerpora sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

“During the search operation, the militants fired on the search party. There was counter firing leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter,” police said.

In the ensuing encounter slain militants have been identified as Nasser Ahmed Mir son of Mohammad Yousuf Mir resident of Brath and Asif Ahmed War son of Ghulam Mohammad War resident of Warpora Sopore. He said that 2 AK 47 and 6 Magazines were recovered from their procession.

According to official sources Naseer Ahmed Mir was active since 17/11/2017 while Asif was missing from his home since 2/02/2019

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of the encounter.

Reports said as soon the news about the killing of a local militant spread, clashes between protesters and security forces erupted in parts of south Kashmir.

Four militants were killed on May 18 in two separate encounters in Pulwama and Baramulla districts while on May 16 in two more gunfights, security forces killed five militants in which two army men and two civilians also lost their lives.

There were just four encounters between security forces and militants between April 11 when Baramulla voted in the first phase and May 6 when the polls ended in the valley. Eight militants were killed in those four encounters.

Official Sources said Sopore encounter was 12th one in this Ramadhan that saw the killing of 19 militants alone. “In total, 45 encounters were witnessed so far,” he said. Pertinently, in militants managed to give a slip to forces in Shopian and Kulgam districts yesterday after massive protests broke out that the gunfight sites resulting in the injuries to scores of youth.

Citizens are requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any.
